परिचय 

“The Light of Asia' भगवान् बुद्ध के जीवन पर एक महाकाव्य है। यह Sir Edwin Arnold की सर्वोत्तम रचनाओं में से एक है। इस कविता के माध्यम से कवि ने भगवान् बुद्ध के जीवन और उनकी शिक्षाओं को वर्णन किया है। उन्होंने इसमें बुद्ध का जन्म, उनके जीवन के प्रारम्भ के अनुभव, उनका संन्यास तथा उनकी शिक्षाओं का वर्णन किया है।

ABOUT THE POET

Sir Edwin Arnold was born on June 10, 1832. He was educated at King's college, London and University College Oxford, latter on. He did his M.A. in 1856. In his student life, he showed great love for poetry. Here, he won the Newdigate Prize for poetry in 1852. In 1856, he came to India as
Principal of Devan College, Poona and held that post for five years. In 1861, he went back to England and joined the staff of the Daily Telegraph. He became the editor of the paper in 1873. In politics, he was a mineral and supporter Lord Lytton's Indian Policy against his Conservative opponents. He loved India greatly―her hoary past, her rich cultural traditions and above all, her philosophy and spiritual history. Among his great poems dealing with the East, The Light of Asia undoubtedly occupies the highest place. This poems was published in 1879.

सर एडविन अर्नोल्ड का जन्म 10 जून, 1832 को हुआ था। वह बाद में किंग्स कॉलेज, लंदन और यूनिवर्सिटी कॉलेज ऑक्सफोर्ड में पढ़े थे। उन्होंने 1856 में एम. ए.। किया। अपने छात्र जीवन में उन्होंने कविता के लिए बहुत प्यार दिखाया। यहां, उन्होंने 1852 में कविता के लिए न्यूडिटेज पुरस्कार जीता। 1856 में, वे पूना के देवन कॉलेज के प्राचार्य के रूप में भारत आए और उस पद पर पांच साल तक रहे। 1861 में, वह इंग्लैंड वापस चले गए और डेली टेलीग्राफ के कर्मचारियों में शामिल हो गए। वह 1873 में पत्र के संपादक बने। राजनीति में, वे अपने प्रतिद्वंद्वी विरोधियों के खिलाफ लॉर्ड लिटन की भारतीय नीति के एक खनिज और समर्थक थे। वह भारत से बहुत प्यार करता था, उसका अतीत, उसकी समृद्ध सांस्कृतिक परंपराएँ और सबसे बढ़कर, उसका दर्शन और आध्यात्मिक इतिहास। पूर्व से निपटने वाली उनकी महान कविताओं में, द लाइट ऑफ एशिया  निस्संदेह सर्वोच्च स्थान पर है। यह कविता 1879 में प्रकाशित हुई थी।

ABOUT THE POEM

Sir Edwin Arnold wrote eight books about the life of Lord Buddha. In the first two books there is the early life of  Buddha. His father, Suddhodana was a king of the Sakayas. His capital was Kapilvastu. The priests had told the king that the prince would either be a great king or great saint. The king was afraid that his son would leave his house and the kingdom one day. So he married him to a beautiful princess. The best comforts were provided in the palace to the prince. But the prince soon, bored to the life of leisure. when he came out to the city alongwith his wise charioteer, Channa, he felt the sufferings of life. Then, for the good of mankind, he decided to leave his kingdom.

कविता के सम्बन्ध में 

सर एडविन अर्नोल्ड ने भगवान बुद्ध के जीवन के बारे में आठ पुस्तकें लिखीं। पहले दो पुस्तकों में बुद्ध का प्रारंभिक जीवन है। उनके पिता, सुद्दोधन शाक्यों के राजा थे। उनकी राजधानी कपिलवस्तु थी। पुजारियों ने राजा से कहा था कि राजकुमार या तो एक महान राजा या महान संत होगा। राजा को डर था कि उसका बेटा एक दिन अपना घर और राज्य छोड़ देगा। इसलिए उन्होंने उससे एक सुंदर राजकुमारी से शादी कर दी। महल में राजकुमार को सबसे अच्छी सुख-सुविधाएं प्रदान की गई थीं। लेकिन राजकुमार जल्द ही, आराम के जीवन से ऊब गया। जब वे अपने बुद्धिमान सारथी, चन्ना के साथ शहर के लिए निकले, तो उन्हें जीवन के कष्टों का अहसास हुआ। फिर, मानव जाति की भलाई के लिए, उसने अपना राज्य छोड़ने का फैसला किया।
