MERCY BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE (1564 - 1616)

प्रस्तुत कविता शेक्सपियरन शैली में लिखी गई 14 पंक्तियों की सॉनेट है। यह उनके प्रसिद्ध सुखांत नाटक Merchant of Venice से लिया गया है। नाटक की कहानी के अनुसार एंटोनियो, अपने मित्र बैसेनियों के लिए शाइलॉक से कुछ धन उधार लेता है। समझौते के अनुसार यदि, एंटोनियो निर्धारित समय पर धन नहीं लौटाटा है तो शाइलॉक उसके शरीर से एक पाउंड

गोश्त लेने का अधिकारी होगा। दुर्भाग्य से एंटोनियो निर्धारित समय से धन नहीं लौटा सका शर्त के अनुसार शाइलॉक उसके शरीर से एक पाउंड गोश्त की मांग करता है। मामला कोर्ट में पहुंचता है जहां पोर्शिया शाइलॉक से एंटोनियो के प्रति दया की भावना रखने की प्रार्थनाा करती।

Mercy is a noble virtue of human heart. It is a divine gift to mankind. It cannot be forced. It is spontaneous. It blesses both the giver and the receiver. It suits kinds better than their Crown. It is a quality of God. When a person giving justice softness it with Mercy, his power is seen like the power of God.

दया (mercy) मानव हृदय का श्रेष्ठ गुण है। मानवता के लिए यह एक दैवी उपहार है। इसके लिए बाध्य नहीं किया जा सकता। यह स्वेच्छा पर है। यह दोनों -- दया करने वाले तथा प्राप्त करने वाले को सुख देती है। यह राजाओं को उनके मुकुट से भी अधिक उत्साह प्रदान करती है। यह ईश्वरीय  गुण है। जब न्याय करने वाला व्यक्ति न्याय को दया से सुकोमल बना लेता है, तो उसकी शक्ति ईश्वर की शक्ति के समान लगती है।
The qwality of mercy is not strain'd,
It dropper as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath : it is twice blessed;
It blessed him that gives and him that takes:

It is mightiest in the mightiest; it becomes
The throned monarch better than his crown;
His sceptre shows the force of temporal power,
The attribute to awe and majesty,
Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings;

But mercy is above this sceptred sway,
It is enthroned in the hearts of kings,
It is an attribute to God himself,
And earthly power doth then show likes God's
When mercy sessions justice.
