A FELLOW TRAVELLER Short Summary in Hindi by A.G. Gardiner

A FELLOW TRAVELLER Short Summary in English

Introduction : A. G. Gardiner was a famous essayist. He wrote under the pen name of 'Alpha of the Plough'. He wrote personal essays. Ordinary subjects became greceful under his pen. In the present essay he writes about a mosquito in the compartment of a railway train. The essay is very delightful as it is marked with touches of quiet humour.

Alone in a train : The writer travelled by the last train from London to Midland town. It was a slow train. It was tolerably full when it started. Travellers got down at every station. Very soon he was left alone.

Becomes aware of the fellow-traveller: The freedom of being alone in a railway carriage is very pleasant. One can do whatever one likes. The writer did nothing. He only looked out of the windows on either side. He then lit a cigarette, sat down and began to read. Now he knew that he was not alone. A mosquito was also there with him. It was his fellow traveller. It came and sat on his nose. He flicked it off. It went around in the carriage and came back and sat on the writer's neck.

The fight: The writer flicked the mosquito off again. It flew away but returned and sat on the back of his hand. The writer could not tolerate it any more. He decided to kill it. He struck a blow with his right hand. The mosquito dodged the attack. A regular fight now began. The writer tried to hit it with his hand and with his paper. He jumped on the seat and chased it round the lamp. He tried every possible way to kill it, but all in vain.

Punishment abolished: The writer seemed helpless and stupid. Now he began to understand the mosquito. It was no longer a mere insect for him. It had a personality of its own. The writer no more felt himself superior to it. He decided to be magnanimous. He countermanded his punishment.

Feelings of relationship : The writer took up his paper. The mosquito came and sat on it. He could easily kill it but he did not. He had begun to feel an affection for it. There was a distant relationship between them. They were fellow travellers. They were fellow mortals. Thus he began to think about the miracle and mystery of life. When he was thus lost in thought a porter reminded him that it was his station. He got down. The mosquito was moving round the lamp.
